Geocache Description:

A well-traveled trail to "The Rock" above Echo Mountain.

This hike begins at the top of Lake Avenue in Altadena (elev. 1848'). You will make your ascent to "The Rock," as it's known by the locals, to an altitude of 4222'. The hike is approximately 8 miles round trip. Along the way, you will enjoy some history. Bring some snacks (or lunch) and plenty of water. Enjoy!

UPDATE 8/8/09 We placed a new cache on "The Rock" today. Its placement should be a quick and easy find. Replacing the cache exactly as you find it will ensure its longevity.

REGARDING THE POSTED SIGN!!!
The "Rock" is 15' past this sign...
Resource Restoration Project
Undesignated Trail Closed!
Violators Punishable
L.A. River
Ranger District
Angeles National Forest 2008

This signs purpose is for mountain bikes, NOT for hikers wishing to take a rest at "The Rock". From "The Rock" west, the trail heading out to the end of the ridge has been badly damaged by mountain bikes. The sign is there to keep those riders from doing more damage to the mountains edge and allow the forest to heal. If you have hiked up or down on the Middle Merrill Trail, to or from this point, you will see the extensive damage mountain bikes are doing to the trail today. The damage is so bad that even hiking on the trail is extremely dangerous in certain areas.
Some of you know me and know that I work with the Forest Service. I can assure you that any one stopping here to search for the cache and enjoying a little relaxation for the day will not be fined or punished by anyone. As a matter of fact, you're more likely to see a rattlesnake up here LONG before you ever see any Forest Service L.E.O. up here.
Rest assured, you can relax here and find the cache without any chance of being punished.

Update 10/10/09 There is no sign to be concerned about anymore. The whole area was incinerated during The Station Fire. The cache survived unburnt.

Update 12/12/15 To better ensure its long term survival, the cache has been moved about 50 feet west of the Rock. The new container is at ground level, about fist-sized.

Please take note as to how the cache is stashed and do your best at re-hiding the cache exactly as you find it. This way it will not be exposed to others that will stop and relax here.
