As you stand at the hiding place of this cache, stop and look around you. Ahead of you towards the mountains you will see the old trail that goes impossibly up the crest of the mountain. Now along the side of the mountain is a new trail, cut from the rock of the mountain by a small crew of people(picture). The entire trail that you have hiked was done by volunteers for the City of Glendale.
Pete and Fred were the trail bosses who architected this trail and the other one you see on the mountain slope to the east (The Crescentia View Trail). Together with a core team of about 4 regular workers, they have re-constructed over six miles of trails that were damaged due to neglect and landslides.
So, as you sign the log for the cache, leave a note to let them know how much you appreciate their volunteer effort
=======================================================
The cache is located very far up the trail. Start from the parking lot and go up the dirt road till it forks to the left. Follow this up to the top and as you head back around the hill you will see a horse tie-up spot surrounded by a white fence and the trail starts next to this.
This is the Rim Of The Valley Trail. It is just a portion of a much longer chain of trails that are supposed to go along the north-eastern ridge of the San Fernando Valley. This segment of the trail was originally built by a contractor for the City of Glendale. Rumor has it that the contractor ran out of money shortly after building the trail a short way out of the stream bed. From that point forward the contractor followed the ridge of the hills using some awkwardly place rail ties for anchors. Several years after construction, a heavy rain washed out one of the two bridges and destroyed a major portion of the ridge trail. It stayed that way until the Volunteers rebuilt it with new switchbacks.
