Crosswinds Marsh Nature fest 2021 Series
Nature Fest is a nature-oriented event that featured live entertainment, nature crafts, and games, face painting, and free canoeing. This cache is one of a series of 12 geocaches, launched the day after Nature Fest, with each one featuring a pollinator that might be found in Crosswinds Marsh Nature Preserve.
CMM01 - Skipper Butterflies
There have been several species of skipper butterflies reported at Crosswinds Marsh, including the Silver-spotted Skippers, Leonard’s Skippers, Least Skippers, Peck’s Hobomok Skippers, Delaware Skippers, and Crossline Skippers. Skipper butterflies lay their eggs on various types of native grasses. Skippers visit a wide variety of plants for nectar. Some of these include blackberry, Joe Pye weed, wild bergamot, dogbane, boneset, milkweed, buttonbush, goldenrods, asters, purple coneflower, blazing star, ironweed, and New Jersey tea. Many of these nectar plants do very well in our home gardens and landscapes and can attract skippers as well as many other butterflies.
