Geocache Description:

This cache replaces the archived Rainbow Mountain Multi Cache.
It utilises the same cache container, log book, GZ (and CO).

The cache is at the top of Rainbow Mountain (Maungakakaramea), with amazing 360 degree views. The ascent is easily done in 45 minutes, along what is a well graded and surveyed track, that has recently been added to, including Mountain Bike access and alternate MTB tracks.

The cache is near Geodetic Survey Mark 3081 at the base of the fire lookout station.
It is a green Ammo can with a Geocache Sticker on the side.

****************************************
To assist you in finding the cache, the following rhyme may help,
or just for a bit of fun (i.e.: Using the GPSr's functionality):
Use the Geodetic Survey Mark Waypoint Coordinates to start, and ensure your GPS is set to use TRUE North.
From the Geodetic Survey Mark -
Walk past the lookout - you'll be facing South.
While you're there, have a pew and take a look at the view.
Step to your left - Nor' Nor' West - 10 metres will do.
It is there - you can bank on it!!!
****************************************

Please cover again. Note that if there are muggles present, they will see you.

Maungakakaramea is an extinct dacite volcano on the Northern edge of the Waiotapu area. It has significance in botanical and scientific terms as it contains complex mixtures of plant species - some of which are unique in geothermal areas. See Destination Outdoors for additional information about this area.

One of NZ's largest native grasses, Cortaderia fulvida, aka toetoe, is seen growing at the summit. Usually it only grows from sea level up to about 600 metres altitude. It can grow up to 3 metres high.

This site has wonderful 360 degree views. A map could be handy if you want to identify the multitude of visible lakes and volcanic features of this area.

For a map and yet more information, see pages 36-38 of Rotorua Walking Tracks.
