This cache is located in the Old Lutheran Cemetery in Mahwah NJ.
It’s not on any map and very little is written about it. The
cemetery is very old with lots of unusual headstones; the newest of
these is dated in the early 1800's. The site sits high upon a hill,
and reminds me of the “Old West’s Boot Hill”. I
have been working in the area for nearly 12 years and never noticed
it until one day I discovered this little gem of history. I had
made a wrong turn on my lunch break while looking for a quiet place
to park. The grave site is barely visible from Route 17 and easily
accessed from a minimally traveled side street. A large cast iron
sign indicates that in 1713, eleven German Palatine families
settled in this area and organized into a congregation under
Lutheran Pastor Justus Falckner. About 1720, they built a log
church near this site. Stones in this cemetery date from the 18th
to mid-19th centuries, with the earliest stone dated 1745, and
contain the graves of those eleven families.
The Cache was prepared and hidden with the help of a friend and
coworker Pap, from the Cachers GranAndPap. The cache is not very
large but can hold small geocoins, so bring your own pencil. The
cache is well hidden, but in plain site. There is no need to
disturb any of the plots in the cemetery, so please have respect
for the people buried here. When, or if you find the cache, stay
awhile and enjoy exploring the cemetery. Bring some paper and
charcoal and make a rubbing of some of the stones. This is a very
cool place to contemplate mortality. There is a Where's George
Dollar that needs to be spent for the FTF!
