This micro cache is located along a hidden pedestrian overlook very near the Chittenden Locks on the south side of Salmon Bay. Kiwanis Ravine is about one block west of Commodore Park and approximately one block east of Discovery Park in Seattle's Magnolia neighborhood.
Kiwanis Ravine is home to Seattle's largest active colony of Great Blue Herons. In a typical year, more than one hundred Great Blue Heron chicks hatch from nests in this ravine. While there is no access into the the ravine itself, the pedestrian bridge over the railroad tracks has the best view of the heronry. If the timing is right during your visit, you'll be able to do some trainspotting as well.
The herons nest in the colony from approximately February through mid-summer. Winter is the best time of year to see the heron nests in the leafless trees. From May through June, you'll be able to hear the raucous noise of hungry chicks clamoring for food. While you're in the area, you might see these noble birds fishing along the shore from Golden Gardens to Discovery Park. By the end of the summer, most of the herons will have departed for winter foraging grounds.
The container is a bison tube. When you replace the cache, please try to make sure it is not out of reach for the next finder.
