This cache is part of the Camp MiGO’s 2nd annual event. This cache is placed to recognize one of Michigan’s many lakes. This cache is located just off one of the many trails located in Sleepy Hollow State Park. Most of the trails are well groomed and hard packed making a bike a great way to get to the caches in the area. A Michigan Passport is required for entry to the park and may be purchased there. Keep in mind during the hunting season to be aware of hunters in the area. Hunting is allowed from September 15th until April 1st each year.
Martiny Lake – is located in northwest Mecosta County between Barryton and Mecosta. The lake was created in 1954 when Winchester Cam on the South Branch of the Chippewa River created a folding that involved nin smaller lakes. Those lakes and their respective sizes include: Boom, 42.7 acres; Dogfish, 5 acres; Big Evans; 194 acres; Lower Evans, 52.6 acres; Upper Evans, 41.9 acres; Lost, 30 acres; Manake, 14 acres: Saddleback, 11.8 acres; and Tubbs, 116 acres.
So, Martiny Lake is really one large lake with nine basins through which the South Branch of the Chippewa River meanders. The region is often referred to as Michigan’s Everglades because-the exception of highly developed Tubbs and Boom Lakes- Martiny’s wooded and marshy environment teems with fish, waterfowl and other wildlife. In summer, it receives a considerable amount of boating pressure, but fishing pressure is fairly light and the lake is mostly ignored in winter.
This cache is a lock and lock container located along one of the many trails in the Sleepy Hollow State Park. There is no bushwhacking required and its less than 70 feet off the trail.
