Crosswinds Marsh Nature fest 2021 Series
Nature Fest is a nature-oriented event that featured live entertainment, nature crafts, and games, face painting, and free canoeing. This cache is one of a series of 12 geocaches, launched the day after Nature Fest, with each one featuring a pollinator that might be found in Crosswinds Marsh Nature Preserve.
CMM04 - Ruby-throated Hummingbird
The ruby-throated hummingbird is Michigan’s only native hummingbird species. This bird weighs 0.1-0.2 ounces, which is about the same as a quarter or a piece of paper. Often you will only see a blur of something fly by and hear the buzz of their wings because they flap their wings approximately 700 times in 10 seconds! While many people enjoy putting out a sugar-water mixture to feed hummingbirds, it is critical to change it daily or it can turn into toxic alcohol and kill them. Even better is to add native plants to your landscape that will attract hummingbirds. They pollinate yellow fumewort, Dutchman’s breeches, Virginia bluebells, wild columbine, beardtongue, milkvetch, foxglove, great lobelia, cardinal flower, monkeyflower, bee balm, and many others. Several native honeysuckle species also attract ruby-throated hummingbirds.
