Geocache Description:

Coin Flip

The Community Celebration @ Crosswinds Marsh event was held on October 24, 2020 to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Geocaching. The original plan was to hold the event in connection with one of the public events presented by the Crosswinds Marsh Interpretive Center during the spring. Because of the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) situation, the event was canceled, and the Anniversary Celebration was postponed. This cache is one of 12 that was placed in connection with the celebration. The theme of the series is Nature Events Through the Months at Crosswinds.

October: Oranges and Yellows and Reds, oh my!
Most people who have been in the north in the fall have probably heard the term “peak color season” referring to the best time to see the fall colors. This stretch of time changes every year because it is all based on temperature, water and light. Throughout the summer the plants are making food through photosynthesis and producing chlorophyll as a byproduct. As the season changes the plant prepares for winter by dropping its leaves, but before they drop a beautiful show unfolds. The chlorophyll breaks down after photosynthesis finishes and the other pigments of bright reds, yellows, and oranges who have been blocked by the chlorophyll are revealed. You can enjoy these colors for only a few weeks before the process ends and the leaves drop off either from the wind or the sheer weight of themselves.

Bonus Cache
There is a 13th Geocache in this series called a Bonus Cache. The only way to obtain the coordinates of this geocache is to solve this puzzle: The coordinates are N 4A BC.DEF W 8G HI.JKL where the numbers associated with letters will be found in the covers of each of the cache containers. Be sure to make note of these as you find each of the caches. For a link to the Bonus Cache click HERE
