Geocache Description:


In March 1857 John B. Hershey and Henry Hershey, trustees, for that Society called Mennonites received in (exchange for 5 shillings from Abraham C. Hershey )one acre of land for the erection of a church for the use of the Society of The Mennonites only and for the purpose of a burial ground for interment of all Christian denominations.
In 1989 the Town of Fort Erie acquired 75 acres adjacent to the Hershey Cemetery.Thirty five acres was re-zoned for cemetery purposes with the intention that HERSHEY will be large cemetery with a life span of 50 years.The 1976 by-law states that "The Burial of indigents shall be restricted to the Hershey Cemetery." This practice has discontinued with the change in the by-law. Information from the book "Many Voices "A collective History of Greater Fort Erie.
