Himalayan balsam is a highly invasive, fast-growing plant that outcompetes native species and can lead to significant soil erosion in the areas it dominates. Although it has an attractive appearance, it spreads very rapidly — its seed pods burst open and can scatter seeds up to seven metres away. The good news is that it can be removed relatively easily by pulling it up from the roots, and with continued effort over several years, affected areas can be successfully restored.
To take part, please wear sturdy footwear such as boots or wellies. As we plan to work in and around the water/stream. Gardening gloves are essential, as the plant’s sap can irritate the skin. Long sleeves are also advisable to protect against nettles, which can be quite harsh at this time of year. Children are very welcome but must be supervised by an adult at all times, particularly as we will be working close to the water.
