I was born and raised in the city. But in my heart I've always
been a country boy so that's where we live today. Even now though,
I still love to come back and enjoy the beautiful sites, sounds,
and food of the city. -DeRock
The "Fool for the City" caches are a series placed in downtown
Grand Rapids and designed to be user friendly if you are traveling
from outside the area, staying downtown, and looking for caches
accessible by foot. Of course, they are nice caches for all other
cachers too.
Each cache highlights a different aspect of our city - historical,
geographical, artistic, and more. After you find each cache, take a
minute to soak in your surroundings. Then you will know why I'm a
"Fool for the City".
Fool for the City - La Grande Vitesse
That bright tomato red artwork just north of you on the Calder
Plaza is called "La Grande Vitesse".
The stabile, created for Grand Rapids by renowned artist and
sculpture Alexander Calder, is a distinctive downtown landmark. It
weighs 42 tons and stands 4 stories tall.
It was named by the artist himself. The name means "great
swiftness", a reference to the river that flows through the heart
of our fair city.
Just 58 feet south of the cache you can see a 1/25th scale model of
the stabile, something most locals don't know exists.
Parking will be a challenge during weekday business hours if you
are driving. Pay the meter (if you can find one) or pay the fine.
Nights and weekends are much easier.
Congratulations to Super Fly on the FTF!
WZZM News Goes Caching
Meredith Ter Haar, the Weekend Features reporter for WZZM 13
here in Grand Rapids, went geocaching recently with her friends and
it was featured on the station's weekend edition.
Here is where they signed the log book-
(Thanks to the Tikibirds for the picture!)
This is the patch Amy left-
The cache was muggled and when I replaced it I put it in almost
the same spot only where it is waterproof now, just inches away
from it's original location
