Ruin of an ancient castle
According to legend, this castle was the home of Uther Pendragon, father of King Arthur of the Round Table, who tried, unsuccessfully, to divert the River Eden to fill the moat. It is not known whether Arthur ever lived here (is anything known for sure about Arthur?). The present structure is Norman, dating from the twelfth century, and was probably built by Hugh de Morville who murdered Thomas a Beckett. It was restored in 1660 by Lady Anne Clifford whose “Highway” leads here. She spent Christmas at the castle that year, but she was then aged 70, so she brought with her a glazed window to keep the cold out of her bed chamber. Her descendants neglected the structure, and it is now a ruin. Some recent restoration was done by the late Raven Frankland whose family still own the castle, but the site is now looked after by English Heritage. The cache is a short distance along the single-track road, but parking is available where this joins the B6259. Because searching might disturb this historic site, the cache is not hidden in or near the grounds of the castle.
