About Hood River
Currently only the tourist railroad stop here. At one time Amtrak stopped here, and prior to that Union Pacific passenger trains
The Mt Hood Railroad started service from Hood River to Dee in 1906. In 1909 it was extended to Parkdale which remains its terminus to this day. The line was built to haul lumber and fruit from the Hood River valley. The passenger station in Hood River opened in 1911 serving both MTHRR and the Union Pacific. The station remains in use to this day but only for the Mt Hood tourist trains.
The line is unique in that it was built with a switchback, normally reserved for logging railroads. A switchback is used to gain elevation in a short distance. It requires back-up moves. The switchback remains a fascinating feature of this railroad
In 1968 the Union Pacific purchased the railroad. As freight movement dwindled, the UP wanted to shutdown the line. A group of investors purchased the line in 1987. Soon after passenger excursion service started.
Today passenger excursions are a vital portion of the Mt Hood Railroad business. There are still some freight movements but not nearly like it was in its heyday. The Mt Hood RR has a variety of services that a family friendly and for a romantic dinner. As a railfan, it is a great experience.
