Geocache Description:

Near this spot on September 21, 1780, British Major John Andre met with American General Benedict Arnold in order to receive the plans to West Point. From here they traveled to the home of Joshua Hett Smith near the present day Helen Hayes Hospital where the plans were turned over.

Two days later Andre was captured near Tarrytown and the plans for West Point were discovered on his person. Arnold escaped across the Hudson and met the British troops near New York. Andre was tried and hung as a spy in Tappan.

If the tide is out you can find a rock on the shore with the inscription “Andre the spy landed here on September 21, 1780”.

The cache is a small lock and lock container and is hidden just off the bike trail which runs from Haverstraw to Nyack. It's located in Haverstraw Beach State Park. Parking for the trail can be found in Haverstraw, at Rockland Lake and in Nyack. Parking in Nyack may involve a seasonal fee. The cache is only accessible during daylight hours.
