This old roadhouse was once called McHat Inn, the log construction, gas and a few cabins beckoned travelers off the highway. It’s rumored that at one time it even boasted a “Red Light” out front calling the folks from the Elmo Dance Hall located across the road, but nobody will say for sure. The dance hall was demolished when the interstate was constructed.
In the mid 1940’s the roof and dormers (seen in early photographs) were replaced, and the oversized wagon wheels were rolled out front and the establishment was renamed Wagon Wheel Inn. The oversized wheels are gone but there is still an old wagon just west of the building. Today it is a private residence so please grab the cache take a picture if you wish and travel on down the Mother Road.
This cache is part of the Historic Route 66 Geocaching Project, a series created by the Historic Route 66 Association of Arizona and designated as an official Arizona Centennial Legacy Project by the Arizona Historical Advisory Commission.
