The Community Celebration @ Crosswinds Marsh event was held on October 24, 2020 to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of Geocaching. The original plan was to hold the event in connection with one of the public events presented by the Crosswinds Marsh Interpretive Center during the spring. Because of the Coronavirus 2019 (COVID-19) situation, the event was canceled, and the Anniversary Celebration was postponed. This cache is one of 12 that was placed in connection with the celebration. The theme of the series is Nature Events Through the Months at Crosswinds.
August: Nature’s Night Lights
Whether you call them fireflies or lightning bugs, you automatically know these little creatures when you see them on summer evenings. These small insects perform an amazing act of blinking light through a chemical reaction called bioluminescence. They communicate with one another through the blinking, and although it sometimes looks random to us, if we look closely we can see there is always a set pattern, but they differ between species. These little creatures love hot, humid evenings, so you can see why their peak season is August.
Bonus Cache
There is a 13th Geocache in this series called a Bonus Cache. The only way to obtain the coordinates of this geocache is to solve this puzzle: The coordinates are N 4A BC.DEF W 8G HI.JKL where the numbers associated with letters will be found in the covers of each of the cache containers. Crosswinds Marsh is open from DAWN to DUSK. Admission is free.
