Geocache Description:

Old Bridge, New Bridge - Cobram Barooga Bridge

Welcome to my 41st cache hide...
This is a cache i have been meaning to replace for a while. The original cache under the old bridge on the Victorian end was by "cdmark" that cache has now been archived, and it has opened up the space for this new cache of mine.... Here is an image of the new bridge.

The name of the new bridge does not seem to be listed anywhere, but here is a bit of information on it. The new bridge between Cobram and Barooga was officially opened on Tuesday 27 June 2006. This new bridge replaced the original single lane steel lift bridge (Daintons Bridge) built in 1902. The new bridge cost 9.6 million dollars.

Part of the old bridge on the NSW approach side has been demolished and steps are in place to walk up onto the deck of the bridge. You can park on the Vic side, or even walk there from the starting WP of this cache via walking tracks. From what i have seen it is wheelchair accessible.

Standing on the middle of the old bridge gives you a great view of how it was constructed and how it works. I have included a few images of this below. For details on how the bridge works visit

It also gives you a great view along the River Murray, which at the time of placing the cache, looks in pretty good shape, a stark contrast to 2 years ago. A photo of the view is below.

The container is a 200ml magnetized Sistema container. Be very careful when removing and replacing. The magnets are rare earth hard-drive magnets and are very strong. It the cache drops in the Murray, I will have to make a new one. If it does happen, i'm sure it will be an accident....

THE PUZZLE...

Well its really simple really. Just a simple letter substitution, etc. The starting WP will have you at a granite rock with a plaque on it. This gives you a great view of the new bridge. There is some writing on the plaque. To work out the final coordinates you need to work out....

Number of words in top row of text = A
Number of words in second row of text = B
In the dates 1952 to CDEF

The coordinates for the final waypoint are as follows....

S 35° 54.(D)(C+B)(D-E) E 145°40.(C)(B+C)(B-C)

The brackets are NOT mathematical functions. The only maths functions used are + and - Once calculated it is off for a short walk to GZ. I had some real trouble locking a set of coordinates and after 10 attempts with 50 averages each, I am still not sure how good the coordinates are. Also used a map server called nearmaps to adjust the coords. So it should be within about 5m. If incorrect, and it shouldn't be, please let me know by email or in the log and i will attempt to further fix the situation.

That's about it folks, hope you have a bit of fun in the area.

As always, with elevated caches, please be extremely careful with little kiddies. The drop to the river is very high, and to be honest, the guards to keep kids from climbing or falling are not that great here. Just letting you know.
