Sergeant York Traditional Cache
woodstrider: I visited the site and saw that the hobo camp still persists. This is a very isolated spot and I do not feel comfortable bringing people here anymore- so, Sergeant York, you are archived. Maybe I'll reanimate at the other end of York Ave.

A very short walk to an easy grab and placed to commemorate the 120th anniversity of the birth of Sergeant Alvin Cullum York, a reluctant hero of WW1.
The man who would became one of the most famous heroes of World War 1 was born on a mountain farm in Tennessee on Dec. 13, 1887. Deeply religious, he applied for service exemption from the draft but was turned down. He was eventually sent to Europe.
On Oct. 8, 1918, while still only a corporal, he killed 20 German soldiers and forced a German Major to order an entire group of soldiers to surrender. It was lauded as "the greatest thing accomplished by any private soldier of all the armies of Europe". I like to think that he actually saved the lives of those 132 German soldiers.
In 1928, a portion of Ave A, above 59th St. and extending to 92end St. was renamed in his honor as York Ave. (the portion below 60th St. became Sutton Place).
Sergeant York died on Sept. 2, 1964 and his life spanned an era of huge change. In the beginning of his life, horse power was measured in actually horses and by the time of his death he was witness to the use of atomic weapons and the start of the Space Age.
Please BYOP, twizzers may be helpful, no trade items, available 24/7, less then an hour, but use common sense about after dark visits. Be careful of the traffic and if you drive to the cache site, please obey all traffic rules to avoid a pricey parking ticket. Very busy traffic junction, all pedestrians must cross where indicated. Public transportation available; take subway to 86th St. (East or West side) and transfer to the M86 bus cross town (go east in all cases) and get off at the 91 St and York Ave stop and walk up one block.
Congratulations to AddisonBr's FTF!
