Geocache Description:

Listed coordinates are for the "Artists' Gate." One of 20 gated entrances to Central Park. Each gate was named by Olmsted and Vaux, the park's designers, for the type of person they anticipated entering the park from that area. The cache is not there, but is in another area of the park. To find the actual cache, you will need to solve the puzzle below.

This gate is near and dear to my heart because it is "my" gate. As a member of this profession this is my intended entrance to the park. In the 1862 Annual Report of the Board of Commissioners of the Central Park, where Olmstead and Vaux named each gate for the first time, and explained their reasoning behind each name they said "The business of the artist is to give animation and grace to the world. In this class will naturally be included all whose pursuits are directly connected with the ideas of design either in the leading arts of music, painting, sculpture, architecture, or in the numerous supplementary arts." I doubt they could have foreseen the arts as we know them today: graphic design, HTML, additive color mixing, LED sculpture, graffiti, photoshop, vector art, performance art, abstract expressionism, etc. etc. etc.

"The Gates of Central Park" has been awarded BEST CACHE SERIES for 2009 by the Metro New York Geocaching Society! Thanks to the members, and to everyone who has found these caches in the past year!
