Geocache Description:

The Center for Outdoor Ethics views geocaching as a fun and worthwhile recreational pursuit when done in accordance with land management agency regulations and with Leave No Trace in mind. As the popularity of geocaching has exploded over the past few years, land managers in many areas are seeing more impacts related to geocaching. However, because of geocaching, more and more people are enjoying the outdoors. As responsible geocachers, we have an obligation to tread gingerly on the land and adhere to the Leave No Trace Principles.

LNT02 - Travel & Camp on Durable Surfaces

Principle 2: Travel and Camp on Durable Surfaces;
The goal of backcountry travel is to move through the backcountry while avoiding damage to the land. Travel damage occurs when surface vegetation or communities of organisms are trampled beyond recovery. The resulting barren area leads to soil erosion and the development of undesirable trails. The caches here at Crosswinds are changed out and moved annually to allow for healing of any travel damage that may occur through regular caching activities.

Travel elements to consider when geocaching:

  • Travel on designated trails and roads. Comply with posted signs.
  • If permitted and you must travel off-trail, choose durable surfaces such as rock, sand, gravel and dry grass, and spread out to avoid creating new paths...
  • Use maps and waypoints posted on the cache page to find a route that will minimize impacts.
  • After you’ve finished searching for a cache, the area should look as though you were never there.
  • Do not place a cache in sensitive locations such as fragile vegetation, soils, or critical wildlife habitat.
  • Do not place a cache in special areas such as designated Wilderness Areas, Wild and Scenic River Corridors or near historic and cultural sites.
  • If you notice a path has started to wear in the vicinity of a cache, notify the cache owner to move the cache.
  • Bonus cache hint: B=0.
