EARTH DAY

This cache was launched at the 2019 Earth Day Marsh Cleanup event GC82YX8. It is one of the eight geocaches placed for that event. Earth Day is an annual event celebrated on April 22. Worldwide, various events are held to demonstrate support for environmental protection. First celebrated in 1970, Earth Day now includes events in more than 190 countries, which are now coordinated globally by the Earth Day Network.

The First Earth Day
After witnessing the 1969 massive oil spill in Santa Barbara, California, a U.S. Senator from Wisconsin; Gaylord Nelson, came up with the idea of a national day to focus on the environment. He persuaded Pete McCloskey, a conservation-minded Republican Congressman, to serve as his co-chair to Develop “Earth Day”. They recruited Denis Hayes from Harvard as national coordinator. Hayes built a national staff of 85 to promote events across the land. April 22, 1970, falling between Spring Break and Final Exams, was selected as the date.
