Rosa Park's Traditional Cache

This cache has been archived.

Pofe: Greetings from Geocaching.com

I have been looking at caches in the area that have been temporarily disabled for a while now and it looks like your cache has been under the weather for some time. While I feel that Geocaching.com should hold the location for you and block other cachers from entering the area around this cache for a reasonable amount of time I don’t think we can do so any longer. Therefore, I have archived this cache. If you haven’t done so already, please pick up any remaining cache bits as soon as possible.

When repairs to this cache are completed and it is time to have it reposted, it will be no problem. Just drop me a note and let me know the GC waypoint number of the cache or better yet, the URL of the cache page. You will still be able to access your cache page just as before by going to your “My Cache Page” and clicking the link of your cache.

I will be more than happy to take a look at your cache again to see if it is still is within the guidelines of the Geocaching.com website for cache placement and posting.

I want to thank you for the time that you have taken to contribute to geocaching in the past and am looking forward to seeing your cache up and running in the future.

Geocache Description:

In a scruffy little city park. Surprisingly woodsy - keep an eye out for deer - and TICKS. Bring your own pen or pencil; there is none in the cache.

The park is officially open dawn til dusk, but is accessible to pedestrians 24/7. (I think a city employee is supposed to come lock the gate at dusk, but I have found it open at night. If you go at night and the gate is locked, just park on the shoulder across the street.)

This 13.7 acre park has an interesting history. The land was donated to the city by local developer Jesse Hartman in the 1950s, in honor of his wife.

The Park abuts a Greenwich nature preserve called Laddin's Rock Sanctuary, and many trails connect the properties.

The park had fallen on hard times in the 1990s, morphing into an illegal dumping ground and enclave for homeless people. This prompted the City of Stamford to gate off the entrance to the park's parking lot, effectively shutting out visitors.

A commercial concern wanted to build a driving range, miniature golf course, batting cages and a clubhouse with a restaurant in the park, but residents of Old Greenwich, which borders the park on the west, voiced concerns about the lighting and noise, and Greenwich sued in 1999 to stop the commercial development of the park.

A grass roots group of concerned residents and community organizations, The Friends of Rosa Hartman Park, formed when faced with the alarming prospect of developers razing the park for a golf business.
