Geocache Description:

The abbey and the ruins of the cloister of Vértesszentkereszt are in a romantic surroundings.

It was first mentioned in 1146. The remained walls are outstanding monument of the 12th-13th century's Hungarian Romanesque architecture. It was founded as a Benedictine - later Cherubic - abbey's three-span church. The cloister connected to it is the so called Vörös kolostor (= Red Cloister).
The church changed and expanded gradually over the centuries. A renaissance elements were built into the church in the 16th century's expansion. It was ruined in the Turk era. Fancy stones from the church can be found in the museum of Tata.

To approach the cloister on a far peak of the Vértes-mountain is not an easy job. "Of course" there are no signs at all. We wondered around lot until we found the cloister, but it's worth it! Now, it's much easier for you. In Pusztavám look for Petôfi street starting here: N47° 25.815'; E18° 13.695'
Go on this street until a crossing (N47° 25.294'; E18° 14.568'), turn to NE to find another crossing at N47° 26.166'; E18° 16.624'. Turn here NW, you will go under a working rubber transportation band. 20 meters after the rubberband turn right to a dirt road. Go up to the hill on this road and you will arrive to the parking place of the cloister. The cloister has a steel fence, but the gate is open. (If not, go to N47° 26.596'; E18° 16.295' or N47° 26.606'; E18° 16.260' for a hole in the gate)

It's worth to go around the cloister. The surrounding forest with it's sounds and quietness and sights will make you will special. If you don't feel special find the 28cm diameter, 11cm high plastic box. :-)))

We wish you a pleasant trip and hunting! Anikó, Verus, Laci and Miki
