Gebirgsrandstörung des Thüringer Waldes

Dieser Earthcache soll euch zeigen, dass man sogar mitten in der Suhler Innenstadt über eine geologische Besonderheit stolpern kann. An den oben genannten Koordinaten befindet sich ein Hinweis darauf, der den ganzen Tag lang mit Füßen getreten wird (auch ich musste erst mit der Nase darauf gestoßen werden) und der jetzt etwas mehr Beachtung finden soll.

An dieser Stelle verläuft die südwestliche Randstörung des Thüringer Waldes durch Suhl. Diese Randstörung grenzt den Thüringer Wald von seinem südwestlichen Vorland ab. Hier treffen der harte Granit und widerstandsfähige Porphyrite des Gebirgszuges auf die Buntsandsteine des Vorlandes. Die Entstehung der Randverwerfung hängt mit der Entstehung des Gebirges selbst zusammen. Als typisches Bruchschollengebirge entstand es, als das ursprüngliche Deckgestein aufriss und in mehrere Schollen zerbrach. Durch inneren Druck wurde eine Scholle (Horst genannt) nach oben gedrückt und bildete so den Gebirgszug.
An der Randstörung kann man den Höhenunterschied zwischen einer Gesteinsschicht im Horst und der selben Gesteinsschicht in der benachbarten Scholle messen. Im Falle der Thüringer Gebirgsrandstörung hat man herausgefunden, dass die Horstscholle zwischen 1800 und 2300 Metern hochgehoben wurde. Heute ist der Thüringer Wald jedoch “nur” knapp 1000 Meter hoch und überragt die umgebenden Ebenen nur um 400 bis 700 Meter. Schuld daran ist Erosion, wodurch im Laufe der Zeit 1000 Meter Gestein abgetragen wurden.

Die Lage Suhls auf dieser Randstörung hat die Geschichte und wirtschaftliche Entwicklung der Stadt entscheidend beeinflusst. Wie genau, das möchte ich von euch wissen. Um den Cache zu loggen, beantwortet mir bitte folgende Fragen per Mail:

1.Welcher wichtige Bodenschatz konzentriert sich an der Gebirgsrandstörung? (Oberbegriff reicht, einige konkrete Beispiele können gerne genannt werden.)
2.Vor Ort ist der Verlauf der Gebirgsrandstörung in das Pflaster eingelassen. Dort findet ihr auch eine Jahreszahl. Welche? Warum ist dieses Jahr wichtig für die Stadtgeschichte?
3.In welcher Richtung verläuft die Störung? Miss vor Ort die Richtung der Markierung im Pflaster!

Ihr dürft sofort, nachdem ihr mir die Antworten zugeschickt habt, loggen. Wenn etwas nicht stimmt, melde ich mich bei euch.

Über ein Foto von euch vor Ort, zum Beispiel vor dem Steinhaufen, zu dem die Markierung im Pflaster verläuft (siehe Beispielbild), würde ich mich freuen. Dieses Foto könnt ihr im Log hochladen.

Fault at the edge of the Thuringian Forest

This cache shall show you that you can find even in the center of Suhl a special geological feature. At the coordinates above there is a clue to it that is too often trampled over and that now should receive a bit more attention.

At this point the south-western edge fault of the Thuringian Forest runs through Suhl. This fault departs the Thuringian Forest from its south-western foothills. Here the hard granite and resistant porphyrites of the mountain range meet the bunter of the foothills. The origin of this fault is connected with the origin of the mountain range itself. As typical fault block mountains it was formed when the original bedrock broke apart into several blocks. Due to inner pressure one block (also called horst) was lifted above the others, forming the mountain range. The Thuringian Forest belongs to the lifted type, that means that the horst was lifted without being tilted.
At the fault one can measure the height difference between some stone layers in the lifted horst and the same layers in the bordering block and thus find that the horst was liftet between 1800 and 2300 meters. But today the Thuringian Forest is “only” 1000 meters high and just 400 – 700 metres above the surrounding planes. This is due to erosion, wearing down 1000 meters of rock.

The fact that Suhl is situated on that fault influenced strongly its history and economic development. How exactly I want to know from you. To log the Cache, please answer the following questions and send me an e- mail with your answers:

1. Which important mineral resources are concentrated at the fault? (generic term is enough, some concrete examples may be added)
2. At the location of this Cache the course of the fault is marked in the pavement. You will also find a date there (year only). Which? Why is this date important for the history of Suhl?
3. In which direction does the fault run? Please measure the direction of the line in the pavement. Does the measured direction meet your expectations considering what you have learned above?

You can log the cache immediately after you sent me the answers. If something is wrong, I will ask you about this.
