The Treasure of Agia Pelagia
Tinos is an island of the Greek Cyclades, of high importance for both catholic and orthodox Greeks. Every year thousands of believers travel to Tinos to pray in the "Panagía Evangelistria", the most important sacral monument of the orthodox church, for their wishes of health and wealth (no comment...), and some even crouch on their knees up the stairs of the church. The boom began, when the nun Pelagia found an icon of the Holy Mother in the ruins of an old chapel in 1823, on that place, where afterwards the holy monument has been built. The icon is believed to be made by the evangelist Lucas in the first century of christendom. Since Pelagia found the icon, a holy spring of water comes out of the rocks right there. The water is believed to be as miraculous as the holy icon itself. Anyway - Tinos is not to compare to the other cycladic islands and is well worth a visit, for example because of the numerous pidgeon towers of the venetian period.
Besides this cultural treasures there is a traditional cache in this area: For those who like small puzzles on their raid here comes a some kind of poetic description:
After the ferry did spit you onto the land, You might get some kind of vehicle under your hand.
A good advice may be:
Go to Dimitri.
The way to the Agia Pelagia would be too far on your feet!
After getting the devices you need
Find your way up into the mountains – up to Triandaros village,
On the way to the monastery, where the nun Pelagia lived her later age.
In Triandaros by the imposing church your eyes will be caught,
And there move up on 102 stairs, where often the wind blasts up hot.
Pass the chapel of the two pidgeons to your right,
And if you like to stop there at a wonderful Bougainvillea – you might!
About three meters from there you should see a hole in an old ruin.
Take a closer look to that hole – that’s what should be your next doing.
You should find a small cylindric box in there – congratulations!
The treasure of the Agia Pelagia is no longer hidden for you!
And that's, what you might find:
1. A small bottle with holy (!) water in it - it comes from the holy spring in the Panagía Evangelistria in Chora and is believed to be miraculous and healthy!
2. An icon of Maria and Jesus made as a magnetic plate, eg. for your fridge ;-)
3. A piece of marble from the "marbelous" village Pirgos.
4. A shell from a "hidden" beach near Kionia (we found that type of shells nowhere else on the island)
5. The logbook
6. A pencil
These treasures are hidden in a cylindric box of 6,5 cm diameter and 14,7 cm length.
If you like, you can walk up a mule path from Triandaros up to the monastery, where the Agia Pelagia lived, after you have found the cache. :-)
P.S.: The cache box or logbook contain no informations about the GPS-coordinates, because I forgot to put them in. Maybe the first finder can add these informations in the logbook. Otherwise I have to do it myself during my next visit on Tinos.
Small note on cache maintenance: CharlesMerlin will assist between my visits. Thanks!
ATTENTION: PLEASE NEVER CLIMB INTO ANY RUINS TO LOOK FOR THE CACHE!!!! There is no need to climb to find this cache - if you can't find it in a safe way, it might have been destroyed!
