Katavothres - The vanishing Water

This is an earthcache - there is no physical cache. Instead you must comply with all of the requirements stated at the end of the cache description. Failure to do so will result in your log being deleted without further notice.

At the very tip of the Argostoli peninsula of Kefalonia you can witness an extremely rare geological phenomenon - perhaps even a completely unique phenomenon: The katavothres - or sink holes.
Here the salt sea water enters the sink holes and seems to magically disappear underground.

Στην ίδια την άκρη της χερσονήσου του Αργοστολίου της Κεφαλονιάς μπορείτε να μάρτυρας ένα εξαιρετικά σπάνιο γεωλογικό φαινόμενο - ίσως ακόμη και ένα εντελώς μοναδικό φαινόμενο: Οι Καταβόθρες.
Εδώ το νερό θαλασσινό αλάτι μπαίνει τις καταβόθρες και φαίνεται να εξαφανίζονται μαγικά υπόγειο.

In 1963 Austrian geologists set out to discover where the water entering the katavothres ended up.
Thus 140-160 kilos of bright green dye (uranine a.k.a Fluorescein) was poured into the sink holes. Two weeks passed before the dye reappeared on the other side of the island - in a very beautiful lake - before finally making it to the sea at the village of Karavomilos north of Sami. One mystery solved - however this revelation immediately spawned another mystery: Karavomilos lies above sea level - so how does the water seemingly mysteriously climb uphill?

Only as late as 1989 the French scientist Drogue finally explained the theory behind this particular flow of water - the reason for the water apparently going uphill from the katavothres to karavomilos.
The answer to this riddle lies in the theory of equilibrium. The salty sea water has a higher density than fresh water. During the trip from the katavothres to the other side of the island the sea water gets mixed or diluted with fresh rain water thereby getting brackish. Brackish water has a lower density than salt water thus requiring more volume to maintain the weight equilibrium with the salty sea water.
The solution to the mystery: The larger volume of brackish water is what makes it seam like the water runs uphill while it is just maintaining equilibrium with the salt water on the other side of the island.

Μόνο ως αργά το 1989 ο Γάλλος επιστήμονας Drogue εξήγησε επιτέλους τη θεωρία πίσω από τη συγκεκριμένη ροή του νερού - ο λόγος για το νερό προφανώς ανηφορίζοντας από τις Καταβόθρες στο Καραβόμυλο. Η απάντηση σε αυτό το αίνιγμα βρίσκεται στη θεωρία της ισορροπίας. Το θαλασσινό νερό έχει υψηλότερη πυκνότητα από το γλυκό νερό. Κατά τη διάρκεια του ταξιδιού από τις Καταβόθρες στην άλλη πλευρά του νησιού, το νερό της θάλασσας μπερδεύεται ή να αραιώνεται με φρέσκο νερό της βροχής αυτόν τον τρόπο να πάρει υφάλμυρο. Υφάλμυρο νερό έχει χαμηλότερη πυκνότητα από το νερό άλατος απαιτώντας έτσι περισσότερο όγκο για τη διατήρηση της ισορροπίας βάρους με το θαλασσινό νερό.
