Geocache Description:

The Douala it is the largest city of the state of Cameroon. Located on the Gulf of Guinea in the delta of two rivers. There is a large port from which it exports mainly wood.
In the fourth Bonnanjo is an old pagoda in front of which two are parked old cars and statues of the two artists.



La Pagode

This residence was built in 1905 by the Germans for King Augusta Manga Ndoumbe (King Bell) Taking the trone in 1897, Augustre Manga created a large plantation of cocoa and palm oil in Mungo on the tributaries of the Kamerun - Wouri River to compensate for the decline of Douala´s economy, which was based on the trade monopoly with the hinterland. He also invested significantly in realy estate in Bonanjo. At that time, the fortune of Auguste Manga greatly exceeded that of his contemporaries in Akwa, Deido, and Bonaberi. Deceased in 1908, he only lived at this residence for three years. His son and Heir Rudolph Douala Manga Bell reigned from 1908 to 1914, living here with his wife Emma Engome Davas, who was the daughter of the British captain Dayas and a young women from Bali, Tebedi Eyoum. They would live there until the German authorities jalled Rudolph and hung him on August 8. 1914. Alexandre Ndoumb´ a Douala, the son of martyr Rudoph, chose to live Bali rather than this mansion upon his return from Germany. Known today as Le Parc des Princes, his compoud is now home to the Bell´ s Chefferie. Since 1920, the old mansion has ben occupied by a long list of inhabitants and is still owned by the Bell royal family. Because of its history and the quality of its architecture, this building remains an icon in Douala. The term La Pagode comes from the French writer Louis-Ferdinand Céline, who stayed in Douala from 1916 - 17, who gave it this name in his famous novel Voyage au bout de la nuit.
