Virginia (Irish: Acadh an Iúir ~ originally described as Aghaler meaning 'field at the fork of a river') is a town of population 4,393 persons (2016) located in County Cavan, Ireland. It was founded in the early 17th century and named after Queen Elizabeth I of England.
Lough Ramor is one of the largest lakes in County Cavan stretching approx. 7km in length by 1km at the narrowest point and feeds into the Blackwater and Boyne river systems. It is a popular lake with anglers and a wide variety of fish species are to be found including pike, bream, roach, hybrids, trout and eel. Some record catches have been recorded in recent times, and most noted with visiting anglers from Britain.
The annual Virginia Street Fair, held on the last Sunday of June every year, is a reconstruction of Virginia's original 'Fairday' with animals, trading on the street, craft demonstration and entertainment. Visitors can see Cavan's largest display of vintage vehicles and participate in traditional Irish music and dancing.
Virginia Agricultural Show takes place in August annually and is one of the biggest such shows in the Ireland. The Virginia Pumpkin Festival is held annually during the October Bank Holiday weekend and has become a massive event.
