Bubaque is one of the Bijagós Islands in Guinea-Bissau and is also the name of its main town on the island. The island has a population of approx 6500 - some 4300 of them live in the town Bubaque. The area of the island is 75 km⊃2; - it is 13.6 km long and 8 km wide.
The island is especially known for its wildlife and is heavily forested. It is also where the UNESCO nature reserve headquarters is situated. The Bijagós Islands - the Arquipélago dos Bijagós -are a group of about 88 islands and islets located in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of Guinea-Bissau. The archipelago was formed from the ancient delta of the Geba and Grande de Buba rivers and spans an area of 12,958 km⊃2;. 20 of its islands are populated year-round. There is a high diversity of ecosystems - mangroves with intertidal zones, palm forests, dry and semi-dry forests, secondary and degraded forests, coastal savanna, sand banks and aquatic zones. The archipelago was declared a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve in 1996.
The Bijagos is above all Bubaque, its most populated island and the administrative and tourist capital of the archipelago. It has a very adventurous looking airstrip ... but people arrive in general by ferry. Consulmar Bissau runs a slow ferry which takes - depending on sea conditions 3.5 hrs - check time tables at www.consulmarbissau.com/fr/ferry-routes-bissau-bijagos-bubaque-orango - it usually goes to the island on Friday and returns on Sunday - but better check well ahead. Get the ticket at least a day before as well! We were fortunate to go to the island on a speed boat shuttle from the same company to one of the hotels in the archipelago - which only took 1.5 hrs. On the way back we then took the slow ferry which was great for people watching in any case.
There is plenty to do and see around the island. Beautiful walks through cashew forests and villages, stunning white sand beaches and stunning sunset spots. And now this wonderful island has its first geocache as well!
It is a regular tubber box with logbook - BYOP - located on private property. It would be accessible 24/7, but should only be searched for from sunrise to sunset as not to disturb the neighbors or raise suspensions. You can reach it either by boat via the small landing pad near Les Dauphins or by walking the 1.5 km from the port through the village. The staff around are aware of the secret box! So, no worries! But be nice and at least say hello to the barman!
Bubaque é uma das ilhas do Arquipélago dos Bijagós na Guiné-Bissau, administrativamente pertence à região de Bolama e ao sector de Bubaque. Nesta ilha também está assentada a cidade de Bubaque. A ilha de Bubaque, com uma área de 48 km⊃2;, dezoito dos quais são pântanos alagados pelo oceano durante a maré alta, está situada no canto sudeste do arquipélago. A ilha é conhecida por sua vida selvagem e tem uma área florestal muito grande, sendo uma importante atração turística para a nação. É a ilha mais afectada pela presença dos europeus, escolhida pelos colonizadores alemães antes da I Guerra Mundial e pelo Governo Português depois de 1920, como o centro principal das suas actividades no arquipélago. Os alemães construíram aqui uma fábrica para a extracção do óleo de palma (da espécie Elaeis guineensis); um porto para navios de pequena e média tonelagem na parte setentrional e uma quinta experimental em Etimbato.
Há muito o que fazer e ver ao redor da ilha. Belos passeios pelas florestas e aldeias de cajueiros, praias deslumbrantes de areia branca e pontos de pôr do sol deslumbrantes. E agora esta maravilhosa ilha também tem a sua primeira geocache!
É uma caixa de tubber regular com logbook - BYOP - localizada na orla de uma propriedade privada. Estaria acessível 24 horas por dia, 7 dias por semana, mas só deveria ser procurado do nascer ao pôr do sol para não incomodar os vizinhos ou levantar suspensões. Você pode alcançá-lo de barco através da pequena pista de pouso perto de Les Dauphins ou caminhando 1,5 km do porto pela vila. A equipe ao redor está ciente da caixa secreta! Então, não se preocupe! Mas seja legal e pelo menos diga olá!
