Geocache Description:

Hungary’s biggest Douglas-fir (HU: CGOSPO) You can find the cache near Hungary’s biggest Douglas-fir that has a very special shape and is under environmental protection.

You can find this Douglas-fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii) in the Öszpöte-forest. This tree is the biggest Douglas fir of Hungary with 484 cm circumference of its trunk. It has got personal name because of its odd shape: Candlestick-tree. You know it has very strong lateral horizontal boughes those grow vertically farther of trunk. Maybe you can find far bigger Douglas-firs in America but you have to know that this species of firs is not endemic one in Europe and those are not too old trees. Öszpöte-forest This forest is situated on the area of a medieval village named Öszpöte was destroyed by Turkish agressors in the 16th century. Its soil is sandy therefore the paths are easy-passable ones even if the weather is rainy. You can’t walk up and down in this forest during the night but only in daylight because of shooting parties. (In the hunting season -from oct.1 to nov.10. the seeking is not suggested at all.) Parking place (Elisabeth-grove that is Erzsébet-liget) You can find a map-draft about forest paths here http://users.atw.hu/kaposvarkereszt/oszpote_map.xls The suggested parking place is in the „Elisabeth queen consort memory grove”. The Öszpöte Elisabeth-grove was planted in 1898 and you can find forest resting place with tables and benches where you can light a fire for bacon-grilling etc. Tribute to Elisabeth queen consort Elisabeth (1837-1898) was the wife of Austrian Habsburg Francis Joseph who was the Hungarian king also the emperor of the Austro-Hungarian Monarchy. Elisabeth (Hungarian equivalent: Erzsébet and her pet-name was Sissy) was a Bavarian duchess; she was fond of Hungarians and Hungarians very loved the beautiful and romantic-souled queen consort. She was killed by a mad terrorist in 1898. Hungarians immortalized her name many ways. Think about Erzsébetváros (a part of downtown of Budapest), Pesterzsébet (an uptown of Budapest), the Budapest and Komárom Erzsébet-bridge, etc. Approaching the parking place There are a lot of sandy cart roads in the forest through and through those are partitioning the forest . The crossings are marked with three-digit numbers on short wooden stakes. 1. Center of Rinyabesenyo village N 46° 9.981 E 17° 31.039 2. You drive northward appr. 200 metres, then you turn eastward, leaving the narrow asphalt-coated road and drive eastward to this crossing: 4N 6° 10.206' E 17° 33.230' (No 234 stake) 3. You drive southward to this crossing: N 46° 9.934' E 17° 33.367' (No 75 stake) 4. You drive eastward and drive 50 metres, after this 5. Turn south and drive to the Sissy-trees: N 46° 9.340' E 17° 33.515' Approaching the Candlestick-tree from the parking place 1. You walk northward to the No 142 stake (N 46° 9.659' E 17° 33.434') 2. You walk eastward to the No 152 stake (N 46° 9.846' E 17° 34.765') 3. You walk southward to find the cache 4. You can catch sight of candlestick-tree here (N 46° 9.094' E 17° 35.028'). You can have a rest at the wooden-table here (didn’t you forget to bring some beer with you?)
