Saka is at the highest point of the Baltic limestone shore, which is no doubt the most powerful geological formation in the Baltic Sea region. The limestone shore of 1,200 kilometres reaches from Öland Island up to Lake Ladoga.
The Saka-Ontika section of the limestone shore is made particularly attractive by the fact that the limestone cliff is a steep shore here with the height of 55 metres, practically uninterrupted along the length of 20 kilometres, with the sea reaching its base at places.
For paleontologists of the world the Saka limestone shore is known as a site of discovery of fossils of trilobites, which are extinct sea arthropods. Due to the above-mentioned facts the limestone shore in the Saka-Ontika area of North Estonia has been declared in 1996 a natural heritage and national symbol of Estonia by the Nature Protection Commission of the Estonian Academy of Sciences. Since 19 May 1939 the Saka-Ontika limestone cliff and the forest under it which is rich in species have been under protection.
