The history of Nagyvár

Nagyvár was built in the middle age and was strengthened in the first half of 16th century and belonged the Lendva-Babócsa-Nagykanizsa-Csurgó-Miháld fortificated borderline. It was suitable to protect the inhabitants of surrounding villages against only less Moslim troops and semi-military devastating & pillaging hordes. In 1566 Szigetvár, the strongest castle of South-Transdanubia was occupied by Turks and the Nagyvár defenders’ position turn to hopeless one. Then Thury György the legendary captain of near Nagykanizsa castle reconstructed this castle too. Nagyvár resisted Turkish army up to 1600 but later was ruined definitely.
