Introduction
This cache beckons to take an easy walk to the geodetic tower of Tarhegy in the vicinity of the village of Bugyi. Resin scent and bird song is guaranteed on the way, there's high probability of small games popping up. The tower's watching over a young installed pine forest.
Or at least this was the case until April 2024. It happened at that time that the pine wood from the area on the south side of the tower was harvested and transported, here the forest served as a hideaway completely vanished. The north side has remained untouched, still pouring out the fresh resin scent, especially on warmer summer days.
The "Lord of the Pine woods" takes care of it.
Approach
By motorized vehicle: The point N 47° 14.489' E 19° 9.849' 93 m is reached on the secondary road No. 52103 connecting Bugyi with Alsónémedi and national highway No. 5. Leaving the hard pavement drive 1900 meters northwest to the Lord of the Pine woods on a dirt road that is quite accessible on foot or by car in dry weather, partly in deep sand.
Public transport: get off the bus at Bugyi, Lengyel u. stop.
Another possibility is the hiking trail marked with
on the maps, which can be joined by walking along Rákóczi Ferenc Street from the above-mentioned bus stop. One should rely exclusively on the map lines for there are no painted signs. A very nice 2100-meter walk through fields and forests. Several approaches are also possible from the North.
About the tower
In hidden, overgrown, bushy places, in the depths of forests, in the mountains these concrete cylinders are staring lonely toward the sky, waiting for someone to visit them while discovering the hidden or even less hidden recesses of our small country.
And so spake the Lord: Here thou standest before me, Wanderer... or art thou planning thy route at home, staring at the map, and art thou on thy way hither?
Facts: Reinforced concrete geodetic survey tower built on base point No. 55-2001.
Geographic name: Tarhegy (survey tower)
Height: 30 m, 7-story
Structure: reinforced concrete tube
Built in 1978
There are 107 surveying towers scattered around the country. A structure for surveying purposes, such buildings had been started to construct in Hungary in the 1970's. Back then they were essential for they could be controlled from a distance. Nowadays they are only scarcely used by surveyors mostly as an informative direction. Most of them are closed, climbing on them is prohibited and unsafe. They are state proprietary.
The material is formwork reinforced concrete. By the way this is the tallest type with its 30 meters height. The lower ones were built of prefabricated concrete blocks. The door has mysteriously vanished as well as some parts of the inner iron ladder.
Rest of the towers are shown here.
It's worth to sojourn for a while if you like nature. It can provide curiosity, sight and new experience in every season. In the planted pine forest, if you find the "good" row you can take a pleasant walk in the NE-SW direction on several "lanes" back and forth. In winter, residents of the village often sled on a nearby hill.
Have a fine walk and good luck finding the cache!
