The cache
This cache is meant to present the Fantanele lake, and its
surrounding areas. The box contains a logbook, the introductory
text in 4 languages, pen & pencil, and some smaller gifts.
Location
The cache itself is located on Dobris hill, about 6 km from the
lake. You can get there by car from Huedin on the DJ108 road,
heading to Statiunea Fantanele. Here you can take a walk, and look
around. The area surrounding the lake is quiet and beautiful. To
find the cache, go further until you reach the intersection with
the DJ107p road, and this will take you up to the parking area.
Take a 2 km walk to the cache. The hill is not steep.
Another route is from Gilau, on DJ107p. By taking this route,
you first pass the Gilau and Tarnita lakes (also beautiful areas),
and you reach the parking place after about 35 kilometers.
My recommendation is to go up by Huedin and come down by Gilau.
This is an 80 km long route, but it's worth it. This way you visit
all three lakes.
About Fantanele lake
This is a man made lake for hidroenergetic purposes. The 92 m high
dam was finished in 1976. The lake holds around 220 million cubic
meters of water, and it is 22 kms long. The water is taken through
an 8 km long tunnel system down to the Marisel power plant.
