Geocache Description:

The cache is hidden in the field of a ruined medieval castle Near Újvárfalva village. You have to be careful because demolition experts defused world-war mines here the other day.

Korotna was a medieval village that disappeared in the course of Islam Invasion of south part of Hungary between 1526 and 1686. Near Korotna were Balogd, Besenye, Betlen, Csiszár, Kak, Kandaly, Karácsonykútja, Lencsen, Lók, Szöszle and Szudas disappeared villages those also annihilated by Turks. Memory of only Korotna lives now because of Korotna strong castle it is ruined in the 1600s.

When Osmanly army occupied Kaposvár castle (1555) the defenders leaved Korotna castle and Toygun pasha occupied the castle without fighting.
In the next year Hungarian army leaded by IV. Zrínyi Miklós sieged and re-occupied Korotna. Let’s immortalize the names of the heroes they sqeezed through the crowd of enemy at first and set up the Hungarian flag with apostolic cross instead of Turkish horse tail flag. They were Tompa István and Patacsics Péter.
Ten years after, when Turks occupied Szigetvár castle, Korotna also capitulated.
You can find only forest covered earth mounds and moats now.
This place is near (600 m detour) the 565 km long South Transdanubian Great Blue tourist path it is between Köszeg and Szekszárd towns.

How to approach? This section of the tourist path signed by blue stripe coincides with highway linking Somogysárd and Újvárfalva villages. You can park only by the roadside and you go westward at this point: N 46° 25,302' E 17° 35,080' altitude=145, when the distance to the cache is only 400 m as the crow flies. You have to go a little bit more, beacause you can heading west only 100 m and there you have to walk round the plough-field.
