A 4-part multi in the Lansing Bennett Forest in Duxbury, MA; part of the Bay Circuit Path. The stages take you to features remaining of the last water powered mill in Duxbury.
Built around 1830, Howland's Mill was situated on the east bank of Phillips Brook, a tributary of the South River, which flows out to sea at Scituate. The Mill was originally built as a gristmill but was later changed to a sawmill. This mill had many problems with too little water. A ditch was dug through a hill bringing water out of a nearby swamp to the stream. This ditch can still be seen alongside the bank of the brook. The old mill foundation can also still be seen. The mill had a large wheel several feet below the dam. Water was funneled over the dam and dropped on the wheel to power the mill. Also in the Forest is remnants of a large charcoal pit, used to make fuel for the many iron smelters that were producing castings for the shipbuilding industry.
The first stage is approx 100 ft off the trail; the 2nd & 3rd stages are within 20 ft of the fine trail system. The final requires a few hundred feet bushwhack through low bushes. The stages and the final hide was designed and built by gonascar, so you can expect some moderate evil & surprises.
