Geocache Description:

Weymouth Back River forms a series of necks and large inland coves as it flows into Hingham Bay.  Wetlands & parks line the shores; Bare-Cove Park on the east, and Great Esker Park on the west.  Near the western shore, Whale Island is a small drumlin a few hundred feet from shore, with steep banks and tall pines.  This makes for an ideal water access cache location.

The cache is a 3x5 lock-n-lock, placed on the island.   The recommended access is by watercraft, but I've made the terrain rating only 4.5; since it is theoretically possible to reach the island on foot at low tide.  The hundred feet of intervening mud flats will be a substantial challenge.
If you chose to bring a canoe or kayak, there is a convenient put in just beyond the gate at the end of Puritan Rd in N. Weymouth.  Check this tide chart to plan a launch at or near high tide.

Whether by boat or muddy feet, enjoy one of the finest birdwatching environments on the South Shore.  In the short time it took to place the cache, we saw 3 pairs of nesting ospreys, a flock of white egrets, large flocks of rock doves, a turkey vulture, a kingfisher, and a very friendly commorant.

While in Great Esker Park, the trails will take you to two older caches, Housecleaning Cache, by TeamWidget, and Graham's Cache, by Oggers and Barrs.
Housecleaning Cache is actually so close by, only the easternmost part of Whale Island could qualify for placement of this new cache.
