Stage 2 will be harder to find when it snows.
I used to work in a really nice office park. But just because I'm not there anymore, doesn't mean you can't go enjoy it! It can be seen all aglow from Route 128 across the Cambridge Reservoir in the darkness of the evening. Whether the property management is concerned with energy conservation…I can’t attest to…but lights shine on the face of the buildings and decorate the scene like a metropolitan sky line. The park itself is a beautiful place, so I thought I’d share some of the beauty with you.
So now you will work for your smiley. The coordinates listed are for one of the spots on the reservoir where workers of the Waltham Fire Department and the Animal Rescue League of Boston have repeatedly held operations in ice rescue. Deer have worked themselves out onto the ice and got stuck there. After running around in great circles to avoid them, deer were eventually restrained by the team of humans. One training exercise had been scheduled ahead of time, so when the opportunity to actually perform a rescue came up, the event was a good match.
While I was still at work one day, I could hear pilots hovering helicopters over my office building, so I knew something was up. As I left work, I drove by satellite vans parked all along Winter Street near the coordinated effort. One reporter was on the air talking to his anchor man in the studio. When I got home from work, I watched the story broadcast on the 6:00 news.
DO NOT GO TO THE COORDINATES YOURSELF, but use these coordinates to solve the following puzzle:
Just to be silly, let’s name one of the deer Cal. (The deer is a nomad, but no, is not Nomad… ;) The deer might be fizzy…I mean fuzzy…If Fuzzy Cal could have walked 0.742 mile in a straight line from here, at a bearing of 310.411 and could jump over buildings (I’ve seen one jump over these rock walls!), he/she would have come to another spot it would have felt awkward being in. Go there, being aware that you may attract the attention of some employees of the office park. Please be respectful of the surrounding neighborhood and office parks. No bushwhacking is necessary, and is discouraged!
Find yourself with a clear shot of the sky (this is important to get the full effect)…. You may have to do some work “driving around” to get to that spot. Once you are there, look around, take in the view, and look for a four letter word of which the letters light up…no, it’s not a swear word. Each letter in this four letter word represents a numerical position in the alphabet (A would be 1, B would be 2, etc.) Perform the following calculations using that information to bring you to the next stage, which provides the coordinates for the final. The final is not within the office park, and is a micro…, er, well, sort of….the reward is in the find itself, after all…..right? ;)
N 42 24.(fourth letter times 19)
W 071 16.(second letter times fourth letter)
Parking offset for the final:
Final N plus .114 W minus .138
I've walked the stages and found that I covered a distance of 1.5 miles (no I did not start in the reservoir)...but I know where to go. If you try it, and take those wrong turns that are scenic but yet conundrums, you may go even further!
