Geocache Description:

[ENG] The first cache of this series introduces you St.John`s and St.Paul`s churches in Viljandi

St. Paul’s church
When the town of Viljandi started to grow in the middle of the 19th century the only church in town became too small for the people. The Viljandi estate owner baron Ungern-Stenberg gave the community a part of his estate as building ground for the church.
The architect of the sanctuary that was consecrated in 1866 was Matthias von Holst. During the construction of the building so called Tudor Gothic elements were used as they were fashionable at that time. The author of the altar painting "Christ on the Cross" is Karl Christian Andreae. Since 1866 a G. Knauf organ fills the church with music, the biggest still functional organ of its kind in Estonia. St. John`s church
This Church was a Franciscan Abbey in the Middle Ages. It was used by the townsfolk from the 15th century and turned into a furniture storehouse in 1951. Reconsecrated in 1992, the church has been renovated and is now used as a church and a congregation centre. It has beautiful new stained-glass windows by Renee Aua and wall gobelane carpets made by local textile artist Anu Raud.

[EST] Seeria esimene aare tutvustab pisut Viljandi Jaani ja Viljandi Pauluse kirikut.

Viljandi Pauluse kirik.
Pühakoja ehitusel (arhidekt Matthias von Holst) on kasutanud tollal moesolevaid nn. tudor-gootika stiile. Kirik pühitseti 1866. aastal. Altarimaali "Kristus ristil" autor on Karl Christjan Andreae.

Viljandi Jaani kirik.
Algselt (1466-1472) frantsisklaste kloostriks ehitatud kirik püsis 1560 aastani, mil klooster suleti.
