Jókai gardens Nature Conservation Area!

Territory of the protected area: 3 hectares.
Location: The protected area is situated at 21. Költo St. XII-th district Budapest.

It was Mór Jókai one of the greatest story-tellers ever in Hungary who created for himself this most beautiful tusculanum located at a wonderful place in Budapest. He bought the site in the middle of the 19th century so as not to have to leave the capital, but he could still enjoy the summer coolness, the quiet and the tranquility of the mountain and the great view. The area had been an abandoned quarry at that time, which was recultivated by the enthusiastic 'gentleman gardener', who adored nature all through his life. First he created a vineyard and an orchard, then he made a park around the villa. He planted elms, wallnuts, lindens, maples and chestnuts beside the charcteristic trees of the Budai mountains – quite a few of them still stand there. Later he continuously enriched the elegant orchard and park with herbaceous plants and ornamental shrubs, which became one of the most important meeting-place of the contemporary elite. After his death the area changed hands several times and continuously decreased in value until the Ornithological Institution moved to the premises in the 1960s. Unfortunately the villa could not be saved, but the park has been restored continuously, so it can be seen in its original state of beauty.

In Jókai garden was constructed in the domestic path. The 43 piece placed several stone blocks in showing the geologic past 440 million years. The order issued from on rocks along a walk events across millions of years "products" to learn about.
