In the middle of extensive mining area a unique group of 42 lakes, the Kurtna Lakes, have survived. Such a high concentration of lakes in a small area (about 30 km²) can not be found anywhere else in North Estonia. The topography of the area is characterized by forests growing on varying relief. This is the area of former Kurtna heathland that is overgrown by now. According to the genesis, the Kurtna lakes are thermo-karstic, i.e. the lake basins have been formed in the melting depressions of major glacial blocks. Initially, the lakes could be classified as oligotrophic and dystrophic. Nowadays, the ecological quality of the lake has changed due to the nearby mining industry. There are nice swimming and camping sites on the shore of some of the lakes. The area is suitable for picking mushroom and wild berries.
This multicache will guide you to two of the lakes, another 40 - at your choice. In the cachebox at final location you will find printed orienteering map of the area. The quality is not the best but the roads, paths and lakes are understandable.
First stage: Given coordinates. Micro. Don't dig. You will find the coordinates for the second stage.
Second stage /Final location/: Normal cachebox.
The hint is for both stages :)
