Geocache Description:

This cache shaws a geological rarity near Kaposgyarmat village it is situated in Zselic hilly country. You will find the cache near the ravine (opposite side to "Bivalyfej"). You can find a reserve cache (N46° 16,327 E17° 53,202) in case there are problemes with the main one.

This region belongs to South-Transdanubian „yellow soil” belt – in case you are searching after stone, then you will find no stones here. That is to say, you can find, but this situation does not happen every day, only in one or two places. One of these very few places is the calc-tufa ravine of Lozsit-forest here.
The bygone-days Pannon-sea was filled up by sandy-clayey deposition originated from rivers. The arising plain mounted up later and formed a table-land of 200…250 m height. In the arid period a loess layer deposited on the surface from the fine powders (of limestone, quartz and clay) those were brought by the winds here.
How did the lime-tufa come into existence here (in a very slow process)?
In the course of decaying of the trees and the fallen leaves carbon dioxide occurs and the carbon dioxide dissolves in the rainwater. This water containing carbon dioxide oozes in the soil and dissolves the fine limestone-powder (calcium carbonate) as calcium bicarbonate. When this thin solution leaks out from the soil, the carbon dioxide evaporates and the process written above takes place inversely and lime-tufa (gets contaminated with clay and other impurities) comes in existence.
You can find the cache near the end of the ravine and you can observe the tufa-wall and a tufa-formation called „Bivalyfej” that means „Head of Water-Buffalo”.
You will see ramsons (Allium ursinum) abound in the surrounding forest it is nature protection area; you will protect the environment and you won’t litter, you won’t harm the stones.
You can find the cache near the ravine (opposite side to Bivalyfej).
You can find hart’s tongue ferns also in the additional valleys (Asplenium scolopendrium - it is a strictly protected plant!).
Recommended starting point: N46° 16,764' E017° 52,989' in the main street of Kaposgyarmat. You will go along the tourist path signed by green stripe and you will be heading South. I am afraid, you can't reach the cache immediately because of a fenced part of the forest.
Recommended next waypoint is at N46° 16,263' E017° 52,861' where you find a scartroad and you leave the tourist path.
