Please be prepared for a lengthy hike which can involve significant bushwhacking in swampy terrain. I generally don't post notes of warning to make sure you're on top of things, but in this case it's warranted. Bring extra batteries for your GPSr, a working flashlight, plenty of water, blah, blah blah. You know the drill; just follow the rules and have a good time, , , , , ,
Easiest access is probably the Middleton St. parking coords but even they will require about 2.3 miles round trip of hiking, with 1.2 miles of that being bushwhacking. You will be skirting a swamp for a lot of that distance, so be prepared with adequate maps/understanding of this area.
Just days before the 911 attacks my friend Britpitts came to America (from England) in connection with what was supposed to be a very temporary job for her husband. As she and her family spent more time here, they set down more and more roots; making friends, sending their children through the school systems and at one point "home" became this side of the pond. On August 15th she qualified to become a naturalized citizen and will officially be sworn in on September 9th of this year. I first met Rachel through geocaching and have had the pleasure of her company on several geo-outings since.
In hearing about her qualifying for citizenship, I began thinking about how many millions of other immigrants have come before her, including my own mother who escaped East Germany by jumping the Berlin wall. Were it not for her decision to do so, you might be seeking out Nashuan caches all across Europe, except that they would be under a name other than "Nashuan". So many people from hundreds of countries over some 10 generations: all left everything they know to be familiar and stepped into the unknown to start new lives in the United States.
This cache celebrates Britpitts (including family) and everyone else who made a choice to come to America, to make this country their home and to go on to become citizens. The blending of cultures and talents and ideas has helped shape the United States into what it is today. We are not a perfect society and have a long way to go, but for millions the world over we are the shining land of opportunity for which they reach. The contents are themed as red, white and/or blue and can be accessed from a few different parking areas. In keeping true to the theme, I parked off of N. Liberty St. at N 42° 38.008 W 071° 01.797 (though Sharpner's Pond Rd. and Middleton Rd. parking area's are both shorter hikes with Middleton the shortest). It is not specifically set up as winter-friendly but should not be too difficult to locate. You're looking for a large ammo can.
Congfratulations to Froedo Bagginz and The Lynch Three for co-FTF!
