THE LEGEND OF THE COUNTERFEITERS' CAVE

One of the many legends of lore about Tekoa is that somewhere on the mountain there are caves. Depending on the version of the story you hear, there may be pirates involved and there may be long-dead human remains involved. But as with most legends, this one is probably rooted in fact.

According to legend, the cave was located either in Montgomery or Woronoco, and a gang of counterfeiters operated there during the late 18th or early 19th century when Woronoco was known as Salmon Falls.

Silas "Sile" Doty was born in 1800 and was one of the foremost thieves and burglars of his era. There is evidence that old Silas came to associate with one Mr. Lyman Parks. Mr. Parks was a resident of Salmon Falls and a prominent sketch artist and engraver. Late in Silas Doty's life he told stories of he and Lyman Park's counterfeiting operation and the hidden cave on Tekoa where they would do most of their work.
