THE MUSEUM VILLAGE (Skanzen)
The Szenna Outdoor Ethnographic Collection in Somogy county is unique, because it was created by a local initiative in a real, living village. Its goal is to preserve the most beautiful, still existing wooden structures of Somogy county by transplanting them to the museum's collection. The moving and rebuilding happens with a strive for authenticity, preserving as many old wooden elements as possible, applying traditional materials and techniques.
Szenna's topography, its folk architectural traditions, an existing house from 1848 (now operating as a hostel) and the beautiful church with painted wood paneled ceiling from 1785 made the village a suitable location for the collection. The first house was moved here in 1975-76, opened for visitors in 1978. The museum has been slowly but steadily growing ever since. Now there are several residential buildings with the required farm buildings, cellars and press houses. The previously mentioned Calvinist church, built in folk Baroque style, located in the museum's area, is still in use. Mass is held here every Sunday at 10 am.

The cache is hidden inside the museum and you need to pay the entrance fee in order to get access to it.

ALTERNATIVE CACHE
If you are in a rush, or if this museum is not your kind of a thing, or it is not open, you may look for the tiny alternative cache on the wooden structure next to the parking lot.

SZENNA
As most villages in the hilly Zselic, Szenna also developed in the valley of a creek. The creek named Deregélyi cuts the village into two. Topography influenced the set up of the settlement. The plots are narrow, houses were built close to the road, on the deepest section.
The village's name was first mentioned in writing in 1252 in the foundation document of the nearby abbey of Szentbenedek.
In 1446 it belonged to the castle of Kaposvár. In 1500 King Ulászló II gave it to János Corvin, the illegal son of King Mathias. Later it belonged to various landowners, then from 1715 on until the end of WW II to the prestigious Eszterházy family together with the surrounding forest and plow-land.
As the village was rather isolated it has always lived in relative peace.
The main occupation has always been agriculture and livestock-farming. The hilly terrain was suitable for fruit- and wine-growing. They also grew grain and hemp. The acorn from the nearby forests was perfect for raising pigs, and they also had cattle.
Also due to the isolation folk traditions and costumes were kept for a long time. Until the beginning of the first world war, everyone wore traditional folk costumes.
Great changes, modernization happened after the second world war, but attention was given to preserving the traditions - the Skanzen is a perfect example of that.
