Geocache Description:

Kopli Liinidena tuntud töölise elurajoon Tallinnas ehitati 1913–1917.  Isoleeritud asukoht, multifunktsionaalsuse puudumine ja vilets kinnisvara põhjustasid siin hiljem äärmusliku allakäigu ja koht muutus Eesti kurikuulsamaks slummiks. Nüüd on elu väljasurnud ja getoelanikke napib.

When my own neighbourhood slums were investigated through and through, I went the scariest part of Tallinn – Kopli lines. For centuries the meadows among the forested areas on the Kopli peninsula were used for pastures, that’s why it was called Kopli, which actually means “pasture”. Kopli became one of the most appreciated working class residential districts of Tallinn by the late 1930’s. Inexpensive workers’ flats, for example in two-storey wooden houses with a brick stairwell, were indeed small and offered few modern comforts, yet its wonderful natural environment and location by the sea, and its well-developed infrastructure with service, commercial, medical, educational and cultural institutions compensated for its deficiencies. In its modest way, the living environment of Kopli was almost perfectly complete. By the time independence was regained, the reputation of the residents of the “Lines” was hopelessly bad. The Kopli Lines are in the mental picture of other townspeople a gathering place for bums with squalid houses on the verge of collapse where a “normal person” cannot live. I recommend to come in daylight and take gloves with you. Although cache is drive-in, I would recommend to park the car by soupkitchen or by church and take a litlle walk around.
