Blubber Hollow is what the hills and flatlands along this part of North River is called. Possibly the consequence of the whale oil factory that once produced candles and lantern oil here, but more probably because of the 19th century tanneries, which used oils extracted from whale blubber.
This was one of the country’s earliest industrial sites, with a warren of mills & tanneries that operated more than 200 years ago and, for a period, produced the largest amount of tanned leather in the country.
The factories prospered until the 1950's - 1960's . Alas, almost all of them closed or burned decades ago. All that is left today of the once great industrial area is dormant, polluted lots, homeless lean-to's, & discarded trash which blight this neighborhood.

12/12/18 Most of the old factories/buildings have been removed as well as the homeless lean-to's. The area is being prepped to build condos. This side of the river is still in very sad shape. I will continue to do CITO here. Also, there is a new recreational marijuana shop opening in the Medical Marijuana Dispensary, which is just around the corner. Parking is expected to be a problem. There is limited parking on the street where cache is. Salem is notorious for monitoring their parking; you will get ticketed if parked in no parking or residential only streets.
