The area south of Kanizsa was a property of the family Bikács. In 1459 András Csapi, member of the Bikács family, lacking a male successor made his daughters his heirs with the permission of king Matthias. One of the heirs, Apollonia married János Both who bought all the remaining land from the other sisters and in 1480 began to build the castle of Botszentgyörgy. After the fall of Szigetvár in 1566, Gáspár Both successfully defended his castle against the Turkish army. After this, Ferenc Tahy, the chief captain of Kanizsa, put a royal watch-post here. In the 1570s the castle was strengthened with a rampart from the north, south and west. In 1574 it is listed as part of the defence line of Kanizsa and is registered as a border fortress. Despite its additional victory against the Turks in 1575, the concept of the new defence system of Kanizsa made it unnecessary and was therefore blown up.
