Inauguré le 24 janvier 1984, le centre culturel du Botanique se profile aussitôt comme un espace privilégié de rencontres et d’échanges entre artistes de Bruxelles, de Wallonie et d’ailleurs.
Et, à ses débuts, la diversité des activités est une priorité : arts plastiques, théâtre, musique, cinéma, danse. Il fera feu tous azimuts.
Place à ses pompes et ses actes : En 1986, premier festival de chanson en Communauté française ; De 1988 à 1990, festival de cinéma et de musique, « Eté Botanique », que suivront « Le Botanique fait sa rentrée » et, en septembre 1995, la première édition des Nuits Botanique ; Expositions de choix : rétrospective Félicien Rops (1985), Topor (1989), le génie inventif de Nadar (1995), les productions graphiques du poète Henri Michaux (1995), la créativité subversive de Jean Dubuffet (1996), les photos de l’Agence Magnum (1993 et 2001), le foisonnement créatif autour de René Magritte (1997), les photographies mythiques d’Henri Cartier-Bresson (1998)… Et, plus récemment, accrochages de Bettina Rheims, Elliott Erwitt, « Blow Up », Michel Vanden Eeckhoudt, « Le Congo en marche », « Chaplin et les images »…
Programmation musicale de pointe au mitan des « nineties » : Oasis, dEUS, The Smashing Pumpkins ou Jeff Buckley… Face à une telle pléthore d’activités, chemin faisant, le Botanique se spécialise : musique et arts plastiques d’abord ! Sans pour autant négliger les autres secteurs. Il s’ouvre, parallèlement, aux coproductions et aux collaborations avec des partenaires spécialisés : théâtre, danse, cinéma, spectacles pour jeunes publics qui complètent un agenda déjà bien chargé.

Het cultureel centrum van de Botanique wordt ingehuldigd op 24 januari 1984 en ontpopt zich al snel tot een bevoorrechte ruimte voor ontmoetingen en uitwisselingen tussen artiesten uit Brussel, Wallonië en elders. En van meet af aan wordt de diversiteit aan activiteiten een prioriteit: plastische kunsten, theater, muziek, film, dans.
Het centrum bestrijkt alle disciplines. Tijd om het lof te zingen: in 1986, eerste festival van het chanson in de Franse Gemeenschap; van 1988 tot 1990, film- en muziekfestival, "Eté Botanique", gevolgd door "Le Botanique fait sa rentrée" en, in september 1995, de eerste editie van Les Nuits Botanique; een greep uit de tentoonstellingen: retrospectieve Félicien Rops (1985), Topor (1989), het uitvindersgenie van Nadar (1995), de grafische producties van de dichter Henri Michaux (1995), de subversieve creativiteit van Jean Dubuffet (1996), de foto's van het Agentschap Magnum (1993 en 2001), de creatieve rijkdom rond René Magritte (1997), de mythische foto's van Henri Cartier-Bresson (1998)… En, meer recent, tentoonstellingen van Bettina Rheims, Elliott Erwitt, "Blow Up", Michel Vanden Eeckhoudt, "Congo op weg", "Chaplin in beelden"… een trendy muzikale programmering van halverwege de "nineties": Oasis, dEUS, The Smashing Pumpkins en Jeff Buckley…
Geconfronteerd met een dergelijke overvloed aan activiteiten gaat de Botanique zich gaandeweg specialiseren: muziek en plastische kunsten komen op de eerste plaats! Zonder evenwel de andere sectoren te verwaarlozen. Parallel daarmee stelt het centrum zich open voor coproducties en samenwerkingen met gespecialiseerde partners: theater, dans, film en opvoeringen voor een jeugdig publiek vervolledigen de overvolle agenda.
